Remembering 9/11

Ten years after September 11, 2001, images of the terror attacks have lost none of their appalling power. To mark the anniversary, LIFE.com curated a collection of 911 photographs from the day -- and from the somber, surreal days that followed. The towers, the Pentagon, the terrified, the dead: in the face of such devastation, no single photo or gallery could possibly encompass our collective memories. But in hopes of lending coherence to the horror, we present these pictures -- iconic images; photos forgotten, or never seen; moments great and small from New York, D.C., and cities around the world.
